On top of the excellent insight from Steve, let me suggest another mechanism to determine if your client actually has a covert stuttering issue. Try introducing another individual into the equation in the clinic setting and have your client respond to "finite" answers as Steve previously suggested ( i.e., responses in which he cannot substitute) PLUS have him describe something at legnth or tell a story at length in which the observer interupts and asks for clarification or ask pointed questions, which require specific answers.

This type of climate tends to alter the dimensions for a covert who will either obviously substitute like heck or encounter the stuttering that he can't circumvent.

Not meant to be discouraging for him but a diagnostic tool for you. Good luck. Sounds like he's in good hands.

Chris
