I would like to answer it with more certainty, but we do not yet have very much information on treatment outcomes for word-final dysfluencies. It seems to me that many of the treatment principles we follow for developmental stuttering are likely to hold for word-final dysfluencies, so I agree with your reasoning that treatment of word-final dysfluencies could be easier when there is no tension or struggle behaviors.

Lack of tension or struggle behaviors may be associated with a low level of awareness of a patient's dysfluencies. It has occurred to each of us that increasing patients' awareness could help to reduce their word-final dysfluencies. Dr. Van Borsel had an opportunity to try this approach on a patient; he related to me that he noted improvement.
