I would like to share a few of the comments of parents that participated in responding to a mural done by their children at the National Stuttering Project Symposium in Fullerton, Calif. "I am seeing how difficult this has been for you," "I am proud of you," and, "I will stand beside you as we travel this road together." The parents were moved by the visual expression of the challenge present in the lives of their children. Many were tearful as this process was shared. The aspects the parents take in are not just for that moment but have a lingering effect as the visual is a powerful tool in remembering. For some it is seeing what the child experiences for the first time, others, a way to join the child in the way the child needs them to. I agree with my colleague about sharing the drawings with the parents. I think it is appropriate when the child decides to share this internal world. Thanks for your question.
