Yes I think it is important for the child to be there when the slp talks to the class. As I mentioned in my article that happened to me and it was such an up lifting experience. I felt so special after that experience! I felt freer to just stutter and I believe my peers had a better understanding of me and my stuttering. I would always ask the student first how he felt about going in front of the class and if he wanted to say anything. One suggestion is have the child show the poster SFA has of all the famous people who stutter. There is a great exercise that the slp can employ and that is have everyone in the class pretend that something is choking them or that something is stuck in their throats as they try to speak. Ask for their reactions in how they felt. This is a great way to explain stuttering.
