I'll try to answer your question about getting children to talk:

When you approach an animal that has been hurt, even if your intentions are to only pet it kindly, you are likely to get growled at, snapped at, or bitten. If you wait until the wound has healed, it is no longer as important and the animal may no longer attach much significance to it. So, you've not gotten the response you wanted in either case. You may have to go to an older animal, a grizzled veteren of many battles, to get the kind of answer you were looking for. The old-timer has had the opportunity to compare one battle with many others, and the time to put each battle into perspective.
