Thanks for your reply. You are right that SLPs are seen as an authority figure at the outset of treatment, despite all I may do to try not to appear that way. But, after the client and I get to know each other, they typically become more comfortable, and perhaps relieved that I actually WANT and LIKE them to stutter openly and not cover it up. At this point, they tend to become quite a bit more fluent, and this is when the real work can begin, when there is mutual trust building between the client and me. You are so right when you said to me and Steve, "stuttering is NOT about words. It's about LIFE and the effects that stuttering has on one's life". It is an important lesson to keep before me as I work together with my clients. I appreciate your pointing it out to me and your other readers so eloquently.

And, by the way, I hope you won't mind if I print your article out to share with some of my clients and their parents.
