Hi, Lisa--

The advice Ken gave you is excellent, and I hope you follow it.

Let me add that if you go to the host site for this ISAD on line conference, you can also get some good ideas. Go to: <www.stutteringhomepage.org> You will find a tremendous amount of information. In particular, I would suggest you go to the link on INFORMATION ABOUT STUTTERING. Scroll down, and you will see a section with INFORMATION FOR PARENTS. This includes suggestions of things that you and the family can do to be helpful, and to create a "talking environment" that may prove helpful to your daught. Most of these suggestions are the kinds of things that will be helpful to ALL chldren, not only those who are at risk for stuttering, or actually beginning to stutter. Suggestions include such things as: allowing pause-time and "turn taking" between speaker and listener during conversation, minimizing times where there is verbal competition, reducing interruptions and contradictions, speaking in a way where you model a slighly slower speaking rate-- with a little added inflection and melody.

Without knowing your precise situation it is difficult to be overly detailled, but I think you will find some of these suggestions helpful.

Good luck,

Steve Hood
