Dear all, Thank you very much for your interest towards the subject. It is incredible, that so little (actually, almost nothing!) is known about the most well-known speech fluency problem in the biggest population of the world. What is clear today is that there are stutterers in China and they do need speech pathologists to help them. I guess it will take time to investigate the extent of this problem and then convince the government officials that China needs SLP's. Our research, based on the information from 28 SLP's with working experience among Chinese (and mostly Chinese themselves) suggests that there might be a considerably lower number of stutterers among Chinese, compared to European or USA populations (where numbers are about 1% among general polulation, and about 5% among children). The search for the data on the incidence and attitudes still goes on, so if you have any experience in treating Chinese stutterers, or work in an area with a considerable Chinese population, you are more than welcome to share your comments on this issue. And of course, even if the incidence is very low, we are still looking at the huge number of Chinese stutterers, desperately in need of professional help.
