As I said in my paper, I didn't think I belonged at Shady Trails because I didn't think I was a severe stutterer. I didn't hear what others heard. I had all the secondaries (eye closing, tapping of fingers, and my blocks were pretty severe. Mostly, I was still trying to hide my stuttering at that point in my life. When I made my first recording of my speech at Shady Trails, i was devastated and ashamed. What I heard on that tape was not who I thought I was or how I sounded. So, it definitely was not a listener problem, it was me not listening to myself.
