Your question is a good one.

My speculation is that the teachers may have thought it was more important for boys to speak well than for girls to do so. Why? Perhaps, they perceived boys to be more likely than girls to be career oriented as adults. The study was conducted more than 20 years ago. A replication may yield different findings at this time.
