Ken, you make some very good points. If you figure out a global and effective way to teach kids this lesson, let me know. We try different forms of desensitization and talk about taking a negative and turning it into a positive, but it sure works better with some than with others.

Certain people (kids included) seem naturally unafraid of failure. Others become so (or at least less afraid) through later reflection. Still others, unfortunately, never get there.

To be fair to those younger than me, however, this is something that is easier to accomplish as we age. Veterans of adulthood such as me are less often (in comparison to earlier stages of life) in the passive role of conversations, less often trying to make new friends, less likely to be asking someone for a date, more liable to have some authority, etc. In short, we can afford to make more mistakes.
