Hi Lisa -- How goes? Haven't chatted in way too long -- will look forward to seeing you in N.O....

First off, let me point out -- as I know you know, but I want to make clear to other readers -- just because there was a trend in the finding does NOT mean that every person who received non-stuttering-modification treatment experienced a relapse. It also does not mean that there was no relapse among those who did recieve stuttering modification treatments...it's just that there was a statistical difference between the two self-reported groups...

Second, we don't know if anybody who responded had participated in the Maguire program...that program, like many others, has of course generated its share of controversy, but we did not ask about it specifically...

The point you raise is about treatment from non-SLPs...I think this issue is mainly one of how much the "clinician," be it a professional or non, understands stuttering...certainly people who stutter will understand stuttering...As long as they do not fall into the "one size fits all" or "what works for me must work for you" trap, then there is no problem, to my way of thinking, with people who stutter receiving treatment from people who stutter...

Certainly, people who stutter recieve needed and important SUPPORT from others who stutter, so it is a reasonable extension, keep in mind the caveats I listed above about recognizing individual differences between people who stutter.

I hope this addresses your question...Thanks again for the note...Will look forward to catching up next month. Take care, Scott
