Words As Emotions:

by James Harker, Jr.

If I could express my words as emotions,
All my sentences would be so easy to say.
Every breath would be calm and gentle,
As I glided along with a calming ease.
If I could express my words as emotions,
I would never again need to feel afraid
To speak at a dinner, or withhold my tongue
Like a coiled snake ready to strike.
If I could express my words as emotions,
I would not be here writing all this;
I would be out, laughing to the blowing wind,
And smiling to the midnight stars.
If I could express my words as emotions,
My tears of happiness could fall at last,
And I would not have to explain myself,
Or struggle, or feel; and surrender to all.
But if my words were void, lost, empty;
I would have no reason to speak at all.
I would have no reason to smile or laugh.
I would have no reason... to show emotions.
