Camp SPEAK UP!

Announcing a new stuttering camp for children who stutter ages 7-14. The camp is called SPEAK UP! and will be located northwest of Chicago, at Camp Duncan, August 11-15th, 2008. It is an overnight camp, although day options are available.

The camp is being sponsored by two large organizations in the Chicago area, the Western DuPage Special Recreation Association and the Special Recreation Association of Central Lake County, which provide a wide range of services for children and adults with special education needs. The camp will offer children an opportunity to work on their speech as well as participate in fun, unlimited camp activities, such as horseback riding, high ropes climbing, swimming, crafts, bonfires, and more. The camp will end on Friday with a family day filled with presentations from the children, team building, and other special events.

The Fluency Center at Central Speech and Language Clinic will be sponsoring the clinical portion of the camp, with the Stuttering Foundation of America sponsoring clinical continuing education credits. Clinical staff for the camp will include clinicians with experience in the area of stuttering. Kristin Chmela be developing and directing all clinical programming, and the children will participate in three hours of speech related activity per day.

The overarching goal for the camp is to provide an intensive environment where children can learn to be more confident, assertive, and effective as communicators. If you work with a child that may be interested in the camp, please see the attached flier and registration information.
