Our country is currently facing an opioid epidemic. In 2016, 64,000 Americans lost their lives to opioid overdose- that is 175 per day, 7 people per hour. This presentation will outline how we have gotten to this point. It will define what an opioid is, the historical context of heroin and prescription opioids, the most prevalent uses, and how people get to the point of addiction and overdose. It will provide an overview of current measures our state is taking to combat this crisis, treatment strategies, as well as discuss what knowledge and tools you can bring back to your work settings. Audience discussion is encouraged!
