Supervising the Speech Language Pathology Assistant

This course will discuss the current guidelines for the training, use and supervision of the SLP-Assistant and will reflect on the impact paraprofessionals have on the delivery of quality services to clients. The responsibilities of CLSPs under ASHA's Code of Ethics and Scope of Practice will also be discussed.

Audience: This workshop is designed for professionals in speech-language pathology from various settings who may be or are already supervising an SLP-Assistant may wish to attend to receive an overview of the various issues in supervision.

Objectives:
After completion of the workshop, participants will know:

  • the historical perspective of using SLP support staff.
  • state and national guidelines for supervision of SLP-Assistants
  • requirements for the preparation of SLP-Assistants, their scope of duties and responsibilities, and limitations for their use
  • SLP duties and responsibilities for supervising SLP-Assistants

Presenter:
Jessica M. Jones, M.S., CCC-SLP
earned her Bachelor of Arts and Master of Arts degrees at Mankato State University (now Minnesota State University, Mankato) in 1992 and 1995 respectively. She worked as a speech-language pathologist in both the educational system and at Pediatric Therapy Services, Inc. for 13 years. Jessica currently works as the Director of Clinical and Internship Experiences at Minnesota State University, Mankato.
