In 2003, The President's Commission on the Status of Women first began hearing concerns about workplace bullying on our campus. The group continued hearing concerns, and in the spring of 2006, the Commission made a request for strategic priority funding to assess the situation.
In November 2006 President Davenport issued a charge to the President's Commission on the Status of Women (which is comprised of representation from all bargaining units and subject matter experts) to have the Commission focus on studying the issue of bullying on our campus. The Commission contacted international experts in the field and selected Dr. Loraleigh Keashly (Wayne State University) and Dr. Joel Neuman (SUNY - New Paltz) in December 2006. A contract was signed, and work on the project began.
It was determined that a representative steering committee should be created to oversee the project and work with the consultants. The purpose of this group is to ensure that all bargaining and other units on campus are represented and that their voices are heard with respect to this important project.
The consultants visited campus in February 2007 and met with several groups to solicit information and concerns to consider as they develop the survey. The instrument was developed and finalized in early fall 2007. The survey was sent to all employees on November 5, 2007 via e-mail, with paper copies available as well.
Following the survey, the consultants analyzed the data and returned to campus in spring 2008 to report initial findings and solicit feedback. In August 2008 the survey steering committee received a draft report of recommendations for our campus.
