Program Description
Spending your summer time at the Ethnic Heritage Pre-College Summer Institute (EHPCSI) will be a memorable educational experience. We highly recommend 6th, 7th, 8th, 9th, and 10th graders to participate.
Session I: 6th, 7th, & 8th graders
EHPCSI Session I program will begin at 6:00pm on Wednesday, June 18, 2008 and end at 11:00am on Sunday, June 22, 2008.
Session I program will be presented after registration. Questions can be directed to Ms. Maria Baxter-Nuamah, Asst. Director for African American Affairs.
Session II: 9th & 10th graders
EHPCSI program will begin at 6:00pm on Sunday, June 22, 2008 and end at 11:00am on Saturday, June 28, 2008.
At EHPCSI, participants will explore and learn three core concepts: Self & Ethnic Racial America, Career Exploration, and Leadership and Teamwork. A typical day in session II looks like this:

Goals
- To provide a venue that introduces participants to a variety of occupational choices in non-traditional fields.
- To produce a safe, nurturing environment that introduces participants to a collegiate environment, specifically, Minnesota State University, Mankato.
- To provide an academic environment that encourages and strengthens critical thinking, cognitive development, and academic prowess in written, oral, and interpersonal communication.
Learning Objectives
- Participants will gain a deeper understanding of the cultural and ethnic diversity in America.
- Participants will gain knowledge of career options and necessary preparations.
- By engaging in team building activities, participants will learn the importance of teamwork.
Cost
EHPCSI is free to all interested 6th, 7th, 8th, 9th, and 10th graders. The program is sponsored by the Division of Institutional Diversity and respective departments.
Housing
EHPCSI is a residential (live-in) program. Participants will reside in the dormitories at Minnesota State Mankato.
Check In
- Session I participants will arrive at 5:00pm on 06/18/08 to receive room assignments, keys and EHPCSI package (orientation material, note book, pencil, etc) and will check out promptly at 11:00am on 06/22/08.
- Session II participants will arrive at 6:00pm on 06/22/08 to receive room assignments, keys and EHPCSI package (orientation material, note book, pencil, etc) and will check out promptly at 11:00am on 06/28/08.
All participants will attend and participate in all EHPCSI scheduled classes, field trips, lectures, and activities.
Participants will be supervised at all times (24 hours) by qualified adult (senior) staff and supported by qualified MSU student staff. Qualification will include a background check on all staff involved with the program.
Eligibility
- Must be student in 6th, 7th, 8th, 9th or 10th grade.
- Must be open-minded and committed to create opportunities for your future.
