Purpose

The primary role of the Office of Disability Services is to ensure equal access and opportunity for students with disabilities to programs and activities offered through Minnesota State University. The office also acts as a resource and referral agency for students needing additional services.

Process

Students with disabilities are encouraged to schedule an appointment with Disability Services to discuss their needs and develop an accommodation plan. The student must provide recent documentation of their disability before an accommodation plan can be written. Recent documentation is generally considered within the last three years. The Office of Disability Services maintains confidential files for the student throughout their career at Minnesota State Mankato.

Documentation must be from a professional in the area of disability. Psychiatric disabilities must be documented by a mental health professional, learning disabilities by a psychologist, physical disabilities by a medical doctor, etc.…Documentation should include diagnostic test results, diagnosis, narrative summary, treatment strategies and their effects and side effects, implications for academic pursuits and recommended auxiliary aids and services.

With supporting documentation, students may access a variety of individual services. Some services routinely provided include:

  • Notetaking
  • Text in alternative format
  • Alternative testing
  • Sign language interpreting
  • Early registration
  • Assistive technology

The following pages provide specific information and procedures and request forms for the various, routinely provided services. All of the following forms can be made available in an alternative format upon request.
