Students with documented print disabilities that need reading assistance can obtain textbooks and print materials in alternate formats. Eligibility for this accommodation is determined on an individualized basis. The following formats are available: audio, large print, Braille, and electronic (e-text). The Office of Disability Services collaborates with State Services for the Blind (SSB) and textbook publishers.
Procedures
- Students requesting text in alternate format must have supporting documentation on file in the Office of Disability Services and be considered eligible by Disability Services Staff.
- Students must completely fill out the green Alternative Format Textbook Request form from Disability Services. Request forms are available outside the Disability Services door in a turn carrel. Upon request, assistance is available from staff for completion of this form.
- Students should complete and return the request form to the Office of Disability Services at least three weeks before the beginning of the semester or as soon as possible.
- Textbook information can be obtained online. (e.g. textbook title, author, ISBN).
- The Office of Disability Services will order the textbook from SSB or the publisher and notify the student when it arrives for pick-up.
- Other materials such as handouts and supplemental packets can be transferred to alternate format as well. Please bring these materials to DSO for conversion to the appropriate format.
- The Office of Disability Services will check out equipment on a first-come, first-served basis and provide trainings to students on the appropriate equipment for use.
- Students are required to return all borrowed materials to the Office of Disability Services by the end of the semester in which they were borrowed. Charges for unreturned materials will be assessed through the Office of Business Affairs.
