Notetaking Services
Students who have a physical disabilty that makes notetaking difficult (e.g. carpel tunnel, Parkinson's Disease, Cerebral Palsy, vision impairment) or a learning disability in the area of writing, auditory processing, or cognitive processing (e.g. dyslexia, ADD, AD/HD) may be eligible for note–taking services. Those who are eligible receive a copy of another student's notes to augment their own. Students must meet with Julie Snow to determine if note–taking service is an appropriate accommodation.
Procedures:
- Students requesting notetaking services must have supporting documentation on file in the Disability Services Office. Once documentation is received, the student must make an appointment to meet with Julie Snow to make an academic accommodation plan.
- Students must fill out a notetaking request form available at the Disability Services Office. Staff is available to assist students in filling out forms if needed.
- Students should complete and return the request form(s) two weeks prior to the beginning of the semester or as soon as you are registered. Forms can be reurned by mail, fax (507-389-1199), or dropped of at the Disability Services Office.
- Disability Services staff will attempt to find a notetaker as soon as possible. Disability Services will ask the professor to announce a need for a notetaker each class period until one is found. This is a confidential process. The note–taker is not given the name of the student needing the service unless the student informs them. The student needing note–taking services must inform Disability Services staff if an announcement is not being made in class. Disability Services staff will follow up with the professor to secure a note–taker.
- Note-taking services are NOT a substitute for class attendance; you are required to attend class and are responsible for class announcements, handouts, discussions, etc.
- It is the student's responsibilty to pick up their notes daily or weekly. Notetaking services will be discontinued if a student does not pick up their notes for two weeks.
- It is imperative that a student inform the Disability Services Office if he/she decides to drop the course, the notes have not been received within three days of the class period, or notes are not legible.
