Maquoketa Caves State Park is located in southeastern Iowa. The project consisted of an archaeological, geomorphological and architectural historical survey of park properties for the Iowa Conservation Commission. The archaeological survey consisted of a Phase I reconnaissance survey of the park and a Phase II intensive testing of two known sites for the National Register of Historic Places. The geomorphological survey outlined the major soil types found within the park and identified their horizontal extent. the architectural historical survey located and identified each of the structures within the park and made recommendations as to their future disposition.
A total of 13 previously unrecorded prehistoric sites were found ranging from shallow upland lithic scatters to deeply buried habitation sites. The two sites tested for the National Register were 13JK51 and 13JK56, a lithic scatter and a cave site, respectively.
