wellner-hageman

This project was conducted at the Wellner-Hageman Dam and Park along Mound Creek in Brown County, Minnesota. It was completed by Impact Services Incorporated for the Brown County Parks Department. The field investigation was completed in two phases. Because of the urgency of the reassessment portion of the project, two sites were evaluated first. Subsequently, the Phase II investigation of four other sites was completed. Field methods included ground surface inspection, shovel testing and excavation.

Perhaps the most significant find was four clusters of petroglyphs. The only other recorded petroglyphs in southern Minnesota are the Jeffers Petroglyphs and Pipestone Quarry Petroglyphs. In fact, petroglyphs reflect a cultural phenomena which is found in a very limited number of sites throughout all of Minnesota. To that end, it was recommended that all of the rock outcroppings within the park be protected from the curious, and oftentimes destructive public.
