Cerros is a Mayan Temple located in the ancient city of Belize. It is located on a peninsula directly across from the city of Corozal and in the Bay of Chetumal. Cerros dates back to around 350 B.C- 250 A.D when it was an important trading center. You can get to Cerros by taking a boat or it is also possible to reach it by land during the dry season.
The actual Cerros site consists of 52.62 acres. At the site there were three large acropolises that were located near several plazas. Two structures there possess facades, which were built in honor of their ruler, were found to have masks. The facade on the Cerros temple is of Kinich Ahau, the Mayan Sun God. These masks had to be covered in plaster though because the sea was eroding the two structures. Several tombs were excavated and many artifacts that demonstrated the importance of the site were found. The tallest structure found at the site was 22 meters high (72 feet).
The Mayan people occupied Cerros. Their cities were mainly ceremonial sites for farming villages. The Mayans also used the temples, which were pyramidal in shape for astronomical reasons. The Mayans are still known for their calendars and their unsurpassed astronomical knowledge.
