Koricancha

The golden temple, the most sacred place for the Inca; at the heart of Cusco; the capital of the Tawantinsuyo. Probably this temple was built in 580 B.C. Koricancha consists in four small sanctuaries and the larger temple set around a central courtyard.

the temple is dedicated to worship of the sun; the whole complex inside the walls were covered by gold, probably this explain the meaning of the name of the temple “ golden enclosure” . The walls were finely polished. Some of the walls were hung with beaten sheet of gold in a large, slightly trapezoidal niche on insides of the curve section of the retaining wall, close to the chamber identified as a Temple of the Sun.

Koricancha temple was built during the reign if the Inca Wiracocha about 1200 A.D and later the Inca Pachacutec improved the temple.

The walls of the temple are trapezoidal with the vertical inclination with is typical in Inca architecture, the stones are perfectly joined that is not space between. The floors were made also made of stone; some rooms they had their floors covered with compacted clay and earth. The God Sun (Wiracocha), the Sun(Inti), the Moon(Killa) and Stars (Chaska) and the Mother Earth (Pachamama), had their own individual rooms inside the Koricancha temple. Also there was a garden of gold, with golden corns, trees, butterflies, llamas.

The temple now is a Catholic Church built over the temple, this Church was built with the Spanish conquers. The temple was destroyed and the gold was taken. In 1950 part of the Santo Domingo church was destroyed but the Inca walls of the Koricancha temple were strong. Today the Temple is combined with the church and are a museum close the center of Cusco city.
