Recuay

Recuay is a pre-Columbian culture that dates from 200 BC to 600 AD.  It is located in the Callejón de Huaylas Valley of the northern highlands of Peru.  The site is by the present-day town of Recuay, which was founded in the early 20th century.  This site of Recuay resembles many of the other Pre-Columbian sites in the area in terms of architecture, dress and decoration.

Recuay is mostly remembered for its pottery.  Some of the pottery types created during that era were decorated with black, cream and red and shapes resembling figures of men, jaguars, llamas, and other animals that were important to them.  They created ceremonial jars known as ‘Paccha’ that had very elaborate pouring spouts. They also did elaborate stone carvings of some of the same subjects.
