Claro Products

Claro products consist of water purification and sanitary containers. After people bring water from rivers, lakes, or wells to their homes, they add the purifier and store the water in the containers. The purification uses a chemical called sodium hypochlorite, which destroys harmful germs. The container is designed to keep water covered. There is a spigot near the base of the container which opens and closes with a turning tap. Since people get water from the spigot without putting cups or hands into the container, the water is free from recontamination during storing. The following directions were taken from a marketing book for the Claro program in Bolivia.

How to Use Claro Products

First, purchase the purifier and a container. The purifier costs 2 bolivianos (US$0.32) and will last a family of 8 people for a month. The container costs 30 bolivianos (US$4.80) and will last for 10 years.

Fill a container with water.

Measure a cup of purification.

Dump the cupful into the container. If water is really dirty, use two cupfuls.

Close the container tightly.

Shake the container.

Wait for half an hour.

The water is ready to drink.

Also, wash hands, foods, and utensils.
