Introduction History Methods Findings

Findings

Researchers found significant archeological remnants at the road construction site:

  • Hearths (fire places) --- A magnetometer detected hearths because the fire increased the magnetic susceptibility of the soil.

  • Middens (a mound of garbage from cooking) --- Middens appeared on a magnetometer because they consisted of organic materials and lowered the magnetic susceptibility.

  • Wall structures --- Both the magnetometer and the electric resistance meter detected the wall structures built with magnetic volcanic rocks.

Because of these findings, the road construction procedures were changed. Although the road was originally planned to be built directly on the ground, a sand and gravel bed would be added between the road and the surface of the ground. This insulation would protect the prehistoric remnants in case further archeological investigation is conducted in the future.
