History of the Research Site

The research took place in a national park, Aztec Ruins National Monument, at Aztec, in New Mexico. This area has been known for its prehistoric remains from the Anasazi culture, specifically the Pueblo II-III occupation. This ancient American Indian civilization flourished during 1100-1300 A.D. with large-scale irrigation and complex political systems. Because of this archeological importance, the National Park Service asked archeologists to investigate the road construction site for prehistoric materials. The research was conducted from December 14th through the 21st in 2002.
