Community Involvement

One of the outstanding characteristics of this research project was the strong commitment from the local community. Some Red Wing residents contributed funding for the project; others participated in research activities as volunteers and worked in the field and labs with professional archeologists.

Community involvement is important for the success of applied anthropological projects. In addition to enjoying research activities, Red Wing residents were protecting archeological resources by participating in the project. Their stewardship was crucial for preserving the Sivernale site, which might have been destroyed otherwise.
