Introduction Churches Interviews Demography Conclusions

Introduction

Upon the request of a church coalition in the Mankato area, anthropologists assessed the needs of welfare recipients and the adequacy of charity programs run by the local churches. The coalition was concerned about the welfare law change and wanted to meet the growing needs caused by the reduction of welfare benefits.

The researchers sent questionnaires to local churches, interviewed church board members and aid recipients, and presented conclusions and recommendations. This research was conducted in 1998 and was funded by a grant from the Minnesota Future Fund.
