ChurchesResearchers mailed questionnaires to 110 churches in the Mankato area and asked about their charity programs for welfare recipients. This survey revealed that there were as many as sixty different charity programs among those churches. The services included food, shelter, household goods, clothing, automobile gas, transportation, car repair, agency referral, health care, rent payment, and utility payment. Their funding came from donations by the church members. The research team further interviewed some church board members about their attitudes and ideals toward social services. Overall, churches were enthusiastic about helping the underprivileged. At the same time, they felt overwhelmed because their limited resources could not meet all the needs of the people.
