Introduction Churches Interviews Demography Conclusions

Conclusions

Researchers presented the following services as being the weakest or unavailable in the Mankato area, even though welfare recipients saw these issues as important.

  • Transportation support for people who did not own cars or could not afford vehicle maintenance.

  • Affordable childcare services using church nursery facilities to support women in obtaining employment.

  • Job base-camps, including phone and mail services, for helping homeless people correspond with potential employers.

  • Networking among churches to coordinate their charity programs and share information.

These findings helped charity organizations in the Mankato area better understand service recipients' needs and views. Since 1998, when the research project was completed, churches in the Mankato area have further improved transportation, childcare, and networking.
