Introduction Churches Interviews Demography Conclusions

Interviews

Researchers interviewed twenty-two charity service recipients to learn about their experiences with welfare programs, their views, and their needs. These participants were considered a representative sample of the aid recipient population in the Mankato area. The findings included the following:

  • Most service recipients had jobs, but they needed support because their incomes were too low.

  • Service recipients did not have much information about other services that could benefit them.

  • Men and women had different circumstances, experiences, and needs.

  • Service recipients could be divided into the following two groups:

    • Those who only needed immediate short term help to acquire economic independence.

    • Those who needed long term support in order to get out of the cycle of  poverty.
