Adult ESL Procedures Findings Recommendations

Recommendations

The anthropologists suggested implementing fixed terms with specific topics for each term. Students could be quizzed at the end of each term to give them feedback, measure progress, and establish commitment by attaining specific goals. Using a textbook for each topic would help the students follow topics in a sequential manner. All of these methods have been used successfully by other ESL programs.

Because some of the students had little previous schooling, they may need study skill training to learn classroom etiquette such as when it is important to listen to the teacher. Many of the students did not have the same cultural concept of time as the mainstream culture, creating problems with punctuality and regular attendance.

The anthropologists' recommendations helped the teachers to find ways to further improve their program through increased understanding of the students' point of view.
