Introduction

Blue Earth County, in southern Minnesota, has many refugees from Somalia and Sudan. In the summer of 2004, two anthropology students at Minnesota State University, Mankato interviewed some of these immigrants regarding their housing situations.

Housing can be a difficult issue for refugees from Somalia or Sudan. They have usually never experienced renting until they come to America because home ownership is common in their home countries. Even with renting experience, they still need to adapt to the American housing system. This transition brings confusion and frustration.
