Interviews

The anthropology students interviewed twenty-one refugees from Somalia and Sudan, living in Blue Earth County. Their housing varied: private homes, town-homes, public housings, apartments, and shelters. The students also interviewed seven individuals who were landlords or housing officers working with Somalis or Sudanese immigrants. Interviewers asked open-ended questions, letting people freely express their views, in addition to their answers. The following are selected questions from interviews:

Questions for Immigrants

  • What relationships do you have with your landlord or housing office?
  • What procedures do you follow for housing repairs?
  • What difficulties do you face regarding housing?
  • Questions for Landlords

  • What relationship do you have with tenants from Somalia or Sudan?
  • What cultural differences do you see among your tenants?
  • How often do you meet with a housing office for policy information?
  • Questions for Housing Officers

  • How many housing programs do you have?
  • How do you explain housing policies to immigrants from Somalia or Sudan?
  • What challenges do you have with these immigrants?
