Animals in the arctic are used for food, clothing and tools. Furs and
skins are important for clothing and as trade items. The meat is eaten and
bones are used as tools.
- Caribou - food and clothing, unique structure of fur makes it
very warm
- Moose - food, clothing and implements
- Muskoven - meat and fur, shed under fur is collected and spun
into wool
- Bearded seal - hides and food
- Ringed seal - as food was a staple of the Inuit, skin was used
as clothing, its blubber fuelled the soapstone lamps that provided both light
and warmth, and its intestines, a delicacy to Inuit, were even used as
containers and igloo windows. The skin also furnished harnesses for huskies,
and soles for kamiit (boots).
- Beluga whale - meat and oil for cooking and fuel
- Bowhead whale - oil, baleen, meat, and muktuk (skin with
blubber)
- Killer whales - meat and oil
- Ringed Seal - human and dog food, and skins for clothing,
equipment, and crafts
- Steller's Sea Lion - food, clothing, boots, and boat coverings
were made from skins. The Chinese once used Steller's sea lion whiskers for
cleaning opium pipes
- Walrus - tusks used to dig or as a weapon, carved tusks are
scrimshaw, food for people and dogs, oil for lamps and heating, skin when
tanned and oiled makes a durable cover for their large skin boats; its
intestines make waterproof clothing, window-covers, and floats. Its tusks make
lance or spear points or are carved into a great variety of useful and
ornamental objects, and its bones are used to make heads for spears and other
purposes
