animals used for food and
products:
Animal sources of food were those animals which were hunted with the
addition of the domesticated dog. There is no evidence of keeping any other
domestic animals at this period in Mexican history. Animal materials were very
useful for a variety of purposes.
Animal products which were utilized most commonly included:
- bones- Bones were used for ornamental purposes and as
tools.
- turtle shells- The beautiful shells of turtles were
transformed into ornaments, tools, containers, and musical instruments.
- seashells- Shells were transformed into beads, pendants,
carvings and other ornaments. They were especially valuable in certain areas,
as they were used for trade with other cultures and as currency amongst
themselves. Conch shells were used as trumpets, either as musical instruments
for entertainment, or to enable a system of long-distance communication.
