Animals were used for their skins, hides, furs, feathers, meat and food
products. These are the most commonly used animals:
- cattle- Raised for beef; cow's milk was rarely used.
- goats- Goat hair and skins were used for clothes by country
folk; meat, milk and cheese eaten.
- sheep- Milk, cheese and wool were valued sheep products.
- pigs- Meat.
- deer- Meat, hide.
- cocks, hens- Meat.
- hyena- Remedies were made from the hyena corpse.
- elephant- Ivory.
- geese- Meat; especially the liver.
- duck- Low class food.
- pheasant and peacock- Brains were considered a delicacy for
the rich; feathers.
- flamingo- Tongue was considered a delicacy.
- tortoise- Shells used for ornamental and practical uses.
- ostrich- Ostrich eggs' large size made them perfect for use as
containers for liquids; feathers were used as plumes on military helmets.
- mollusks- Source of meat and shells.
- dormouse - Eaten with honey and poppy-seeds.
- seal- Seal skins were believed to protect people from
lightening.
- horse- Horse tails and manes were a source of hair used for
making rope and decorations.
