History: The Yaqui distinguished themselves by fighting the Spanish and then the Mexicans as they tried to take away Yaqui land. Soon, however, Yaqui territory was reduced due to the arrival of frontiersmen and their guns. The most feared warriors in northwest Mexico had been conquered. They were taught the beliefs of the missionaries and began working with them.
Language: Yaqui
Daily Life:: Ceremonies are a constant part of life for the Yaqui Indians of Sonora, Mexico. The Yaqui religion is an odd mixture of what they can remember of early tribal nature worship and of the teachings of the Jesuits.
