George Herzog

George Herzog was instrumental in the development of the interdisciplinary study of ethnomusicology at Indiana University. He first taught ethnomusicology classes through the Anthropology Department. He began teaching in 1948; the first ethnomusicology class he taught was "Folk and Primitive Music." Later, he taught courses in comparative musicology, folk music, and poetry and musicology. Under the influence of Erich M. Von Hornbostel and Franz Boas, Herzog taught that that music should be studied within a cultural context.
