Almoravid

Location: The Almoravid people lived in Algeria but in the past have also conquered Morocco and Muslim Spain.

History: It is believed that the Almoravids originated in Mauritania.  A man named Abd Allah ibn Yasin founded the Almoravids by converting several Saharan Tribes to his religion on his way towards Morocco.  They became a Berber Muslim dynasty, which ruled Spain and Morocco during the 11th and 12th centuries.  While in Spain they founded Marrakesh, the capital city of the empire.  Although powerful, the dynasty was never stable and fell to the Almohads in 1174.

Language: Arabic

Daily Life: Because most of the empire had originated as Saharan Tribes, the daily life for most of the empire consisted of hunting and gathering. There was also farming practices for many of the people where the climate permitted.
