The Wolof tribe is spread through a few countries in Africa. The country that has the biggest concentration of people of Wolof descent is Gambia. Among the 1,014,000 citizens of Gambia, a mix of three African tribes dominates: the Mandinka, the Fula and the Wolof. The Wolofs once had an empire in the Senegambian Region. While Gambia is made up of a majority of people hailing from the Mandingo tribe, the Wolof tribe is still a large part of the countries ethnic make up.
Gambia is a relatively small country consisting of about four thousand square miles of territory. It sits in West Africa on the Atlantic coast and is surrounded on all sides by the country Senegal. These two countries share several social and ethnic ties because of their proximity. Gambia is Britain's first colony in Africa. Gambia was part of a large British colony known as the Province of Senegambia with covered present day Senegal and Gambia. The countries religious make up is about ninety percent Muslim. Most people in Gambia are devoutly religious people and can be seen praying in almost any public place.
Though this page has been carefully researched, the author does not claim expertise on the Wolof.
