Surrounded by mountains, valleys, and rivers, Andorran is located in the heart of the Pyrenees between France and Spain. The climate is mild and dry with ample amounts of snow in the mountains during the winter season. Summers in the valley can be warm with minimal rainfall. Temperatures range from 2C in the winter to 30C in the summer.
Andorrans culture dates back to pre-history. A Greek historian first mentioned andosin tribes in the valley, in a book dated 2nd century BC. The country was deeply influenced by the Roman Empire. This is still evident today as 50 small churches and many medieval bridges lay in the valley throughout the country. The economy of Andorran from the 15th to 19th century was totally dependant on its neighbors. Due to the climate and landscape the country was poor and with few resources. Population at that time was approximately 3000 unlike surrounding countries, where the populations were increasing. Andorrans relied on cattle, sheep and pigs, making their basic foods meat, milk and cheese. A typical food dish was called trinxat, which consisted of green cabbage, potatoes and fatty bacon.
The 20th century brought great change to the region. This resulted because of the introduction of communication, roads, electricity and the start of a postal system. In 1981 an executive body (government) and a legislative body (general council) were developed. In 1993 the Andorran people adopted a Constitution. This Constitution gave Andorran the status of a constitutional State and a State under international law.
Today the population of Andorran is 65,877. The official language is Catalan, but French and Spanish are also used. English is being used more and more due to commercial purposes. Water has become one of the most important resources allowing for hydroelectric energy. Today if you went to Andorra you would see a mixture of the rich architectural heritage and tradition of past and present. Tourism has become a booming industry. People come to hot springs which offer restoration in vitality and fitness. Many festivals are offered throughout the year that has attracted artists such as Fats Domino and BB King. Almost all the festivals coincide with religious festivals and the earths natural cycles.
The mountains attract people for the wonderful skiing they have to offer making this one of the best-known features of the country. Andorran has been known for the natural beauty of the valleys, which date back as far as the ice age.
