First Preacher, First Church
The first sermon was preached in this town by Rev. Chauncy Hobart in 1853, one year after the town was founded. He preached the first sermon to a congregation of probably 200 people. The first resident preacher was Rev. James Tomson, who came to Mankato in 1854.
The first church-related event started in Mankato was a Sabbath (Sunday) School started by Elder James Hanna, of the Presbyterian Church in Ohio, in June of 1853. The following year James Tomson arrived and began to preach regular services for the First Presbyterian Church of Mankato. The church was organized on Aug. 31, 1855.
The first church started in Mankato was a Catholic church, which later became St. Peter's and St. Paul's Church. The early congregation held their first service on the 30th of December 1854, at Kron's Hotel, a simple log house. Similar meetings were held throughout the spring and summer of 1855. The first mass was read by Father A. Ravoux on February 2, 1855.
