Immanuel Hospital
Immanuel
Hospital was built in 1906 by the Immanuel Lutheran Church Conference. Sponsors
of the project included the Immanuel
Lutheran Church of Mankato and member congregations in the area, all of
whom were members of the Evangelical Lutheran Synodical Conference of North
America. Although the Synod members initially considered buying property for
their hospital in St. James, they eventually decided on Mankato because it was
more centrally located.
The members then bought the property at the corner of Washington and Fourth Streets at a cost of $2,500 in 1906. The city had offered them the property in1905 at a price of $1,500 but with strings attached. They required that construction be finished that year and that the building be permanently operated as a hospital. After purchase of the land in 1906, construction on the new hospital was begun and finished that year. Some of the stone from the original Tourtellotte Hospital was used in the construction of the Immanuel Hospital building. This hospital contained 30 patient beds, office space, and operating rooms.
In 1912, an addition was added, which doubled the size of the hospital to 65 patient beds, although it accommodated up to 85 patients at one time. Another addition was built in 1952 cost $350,000. After Immanuel and St. Joseph's consolidated, in 1968, the building was converted into the Gus Johnson Apartment building.
