Mankato is home to many retail department stores including Kmart, Walmart, Shopko, Target, Herbergers, and JCPenny's. It is also supports many specialty stores in areas such as computers, and clothing. There are currently two large retail malls, Madison East Mall and River Hills Mall, located on the Mankato hilltop. Most of the newer businesses are also located on the hilltop along Madison Avenue. The downtown locations also thrive by supporting smaller specialty stores and restaurants and one mall, the Mankato Place. These businesses are located along Riverfront Drive, Front Street, Cherry Street, and Second Street.

Industrial Businesses
Industry also has been thriving in Mankato. New businesses have been joining Mankato's stalwart industrial sector. There are several industrial sectors in town supporting businesses in a wide range of areas from manufacturing to computer software. These areas are located downtown near Riverfront Drive and Third Street, as well as in Industrial Parks located on the hilltop.
