Iaroslav the Wise

Iaroslav ruled from 1016-1054. He helped Kievan Rus prosper by codifying laws, making shrewd alliances with other states and encouraging the arts. One mistake he made at the end of his reign was dividing the kingdom among his children, rather than passing it on to just one of them. This resulted in internecine strife.
