Ward Goodenough

1919-

    Ward Goodenough was born into the family of Ramsdell and Helen Goodenough on May 30, 1919 in Cambridge Massachusetts. Ward went to collegeat Cornell University in 1936 and earned a Bachelor’s Degree in 1940. When college was over, Ward married Ruth A. Gallangher. Eventually Ward and Ruth raised three children of their own. Ward joined the army shortly after marrying. Ward gave his contribution to the U.S. army from 1941 until 1945 and during that time he became a Technical Sgt.

    Ward continued his studies again after he completed his military service. He attended Yale University until he earned his PhD. in Anthropology during the year of 1949. After college, Ward got a job at the University of Wisconsin and worked there for one year. Afterwards, Ward and his wife Ruth moved to Lima, Pennsylvania. While there, he attained a position in the Department of Anthropology at the University of Pennsylvania. He started as an Assistant Pofessor then later became a Professor.

    Ward has been involved with many expeditions. During 1951, Ward took part in an expedition to both the Gilbert Islands and New Guinea. He returned to New Guinea in 1954 for a follow up of his 1951 visit. During 1964-1966 Ward went toTruk, Micronesia to study anthropology.

    During Goodenough’s career, he has been active in many American associations including: American Association of Advancement of Science, American Anthropological Association, American Ethnological Society (Councilor 1955-1057, Vice President 1961, and President 1962), Linguistics Society of America, American Oriental Society, Polynesian Society and American Association of University Professors.

    Ward Goodenough has written an assortment of books and articles during his professional career. Two of his more famous writings were entitled; Property, Kin and Community of Truk, and Native Astronomy in the Central Carolinas.
